Chinese NGOs are emerging as key actors in international affairs, foreign diplomacy and multilateral cooperation with the calls for them to work abroad with China’s economic partners. Across policymaking and civil society circles, these NGOs are being urged to “go out,” and lend their expertise in areas including environmental and social development.

GEI explored the current situation and challenges facing Chinese NGOs “Going Out” and provided policy recommendations to further NGOs along this route.

Needs:
A stronger local NGO sector that can provide support in China’s overseas investments and foreign aid.

Approach:
By researching existing difficulties and scope of Chinese NGOs, we published a report and made recommendations for how the sector can improve as they go overseas in the future.

Published a report on the capacity of Chinese NGOs

Hosted a public report launch event that joined representatives from corporations, foundations, and the government to share their perspective on Chinese NGOs’ roles.
