2000 kilometers of coastline along Myanmar’s Bay of Bengal are abundant with mangrove forests. In addition to providing flood control and storm protection as well as habitat for wildlife, fisheries and forests – they also are a source of protein, fruits and vegetables, timber, firewood and roofing materials for local people.
However, due to expanding agricultural land, fast growth of population and excessive cutting for fuelwood, the 85, 533 hectares of mangroves at the beginning of the 1990s decreased by approximately 50 percent in 2002. To conserve mangrove forest and promote sustainable community development, GEI is supporting local Myanmar NGO, MFA, to conduct environmental projects in 7 villages.
Needs:
Increased capacity and action for conservation and community development.
Approach:
Train local partners on the CCCA model and help them carry out conservation projects as well as leverage renewable energy equipment to aid community development in Myanmar.
Conserve mangrove forests and promote market mechanisms for community development in Myanmar.
The Ministry of Forest approved the community’s 50 acre mangrove reserve.
